INTRO
Props and costumes are something we thought about a lot as a group as we knew that it would be the first impression the audience would get of the character. The character is also what makes up a lot of the themes in the film so we knew that the first impression would be the key to the success of our movie. The costume and makeup that we chose we realised would define to the audience the genre and style of our movie and also would reveal a lot about the character without giving away too much. We knew that we wanted our lead character 'ursula' to be slightly eccentric in both dress sense, style and character and so we started to think about and discuss other characters in both present and past media that would inspire us.
In phsycological horror movies, the costume tends to be very modern, connoting that the footage within the movie is recent, and could still happen to anyone. For example, paranormal activity involved a demonic spirit, which couldn't be seen, until someone was possessed. The characters within the movie are generally dressed very casually, however when the antagonist takes human form, the costume changes. In movies such as The Devil Inside, the antagonist is dressed in an old fashioned grey gown, which makes her look ghostly and dull, which reflects the fact that she is possessed.

CHARACTER PROFILES
URSULA
Dr Amy Farra Fowler is a character from the hit US series 'the big bang theory'. The clothes that she wears are very nerdy, with colours and patterns that don't match; drawing attention to her even when she doesn't want to. Amy is a lovable but clumsy, ditsy and somewhat naive character whilst still at the same time being intelligent and this is what we wanted Ursula to be like. Amy was a huge inspiration to the creation of the character of ' Ursula ' in our film.
The pictures below inspire us as to what Ursula would wear. |
While planning the filming of our horror trailer, we concluded that we needed to make sure the audience was aware that the scenario could happen to anyone who doesn't expect such things to occur such as people that tease or bully people, that only laughing at someone can cause grave consequences. To do this we decided that the actors needed to look like normal trendy people their age, except for Ursula hence why she gets bullied.
PROPS
The Scar
In any film, there is a selection of elements that make a movie work. These aspects are found in every movie and without them, the film is sure to fail. Psychological horror movies generally keep to the same conventions of the elements of costume, props and locations of other horror movies but with subtle differences.
An element that is important is props and within the horror genre, if chosen appropriately props can increase the terror in a scene, or destroy it. In our trailer there is a part where ursula slits her wrist in the shape of the devil symbol, shown to your right. She does this which makes her summon the devil within her. To make sure that on the day of filming this is posible to do, we need to practice how to make "fake cuts" thus we will be ready on the day of filming. |
|
|
As scar wax isn't easily accessible, we've decided to make the scar wax (substitute) ourselves. By looking and analising videos from youtube we've chosen the best "how to do" scar wax recipe and also how to make a fake cut, Once the scar wax is made we will be using the method on the top right to show us how to make the actual scar which will then be on Ursula's wrist.
|
|
Here is the first attempt and 2nd attempt at making the cut which would be on Ursula's wrist, We followed the instructions above given by youtube and it was an impressive first attempt. It was a good idea to test it out first because we learnt a lot of things about making cuts which we didn't know before such as directions that you should cut in and blending out, doing this has prepared us as to what to expect when making the real cut for Ursula on the day of filming.
The Demon Face Make-up
A prop we will also use is the makeup and look of what Ursula looks like when she summons the devil . The black cream face paint is essential which makes it look scary, as you can see from the image & video below it adds greatly to the horror effect also along with the wig and eyelashes. The evil character will also wear a black cloak to add to the overall image of the character. There will also be a sense of fear by the way the character is in the mirror while Ursula is seen looking into the mirror at the person who has come in her.

RED EYES
When Ursula transforms into the devil she gets red eyes, and the way to achieve this is by getting Ursula to wear contact lenses. The red eyes are very significant in our synopsis and trailer as it conveys that she has actually summoned the devil within her. Together with her whole attire she will truly look scary and supernatural. Below we went as a group to buy the contact lenses and we had to decide which contacts to get as there were many which when worn could mean different things e.g cat eyes are for cats.
THE NECROMICON
The Necronomicon is the name of a grimoire (book of shadows) invented by the writer H. P. Lovecraft. The name combines Greek words nekros 'the dead', nomos 'law', eikon 'image'. Most people know the Necronomicon from the writer H.P. Lovecraft. The book does not exist physically, but some people say it exists in the astral world and you can access it through dreams and astral travel. There are many different versions of it, each claiming to be the 'real' one. The legend says that if you read the real book, you will just become insane. The Necronomicon is an ancient spell and summoning book. It has many Sumerian gods and demons and their sigils. The summoning itself can be very dangerous and some people say the book is a curse.
EVIL DEAD
This 2013 movie is about five friends, they head to a remote cabin where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only one is left to fight for survival.
Two of the five go into the cellar and discover the stench is coming from the rotting corpses of animals. They also find the "evil book" from before, wrapped in wires and plastic.
The next day, Eric (one of the two who went there the previous day) opens the cover of the book, which is scribbled all over with warnings like "Leave this book alone" and "Do not fucking read this." Naturally, Eric looks through it and finds a page with some words scribbled out and the warning to not speak, write, or hear what is in it. He puts a piece of paper over the book and shades over it with a pencil, revealing several words that he begins to read which results in him summoning the dead. From then on mysterious things start to take place resulting in them all dying except for the final girl.
The idea to use a necronicon derived from "The Evil Dead" , we feel that the awareness of the necronmicon is apparent because of the high success of "The Evil dead" movie, and in our trailer, although its psychological the fact that Ursula summons the devil is a supernatural occurrence as like "the evil dead". We feel that when dealing with/ awakening supernatural entities you aught to use 3rd person objects and in this case it is a book, which we hope will sum up the summoning of the devil for our trailer

To get an idea of how to make the necromicon we searched on youtube and we found two great videos which gave us a lot of inspiration, the first video is for inspiration on how to do the cover of the book and the second video is for how to do the pages inside the book.

The making ...
Here we went out to buy the products to use to make the book which consisted of cotton wool, glue, A4 lined paper, A3 thick card paper.
The first thing that was done was creating the outline of the book and making it look elevated like a real book and to do this we cut a thick strip from the card and sellotaped it in between the A3 cards cut in half. We then wasted no time to make the backing of the book with glue and cotton wool, we waited for it to dry then we painted one coat of brown acrylic paint onto the dried cotton wool base. The results came out really good and we are going to paint it so that the cotton wool underneath can not be seen, we are also going to make it darker to make it look more antique and worn out. |

The pages
|
To your left, there are a few pictures found on Google which have given us inspiration of what to put into the book along with the pictures above from the evil dead necromicon, so its not plain and also so it has a variety of different spooky images and words that no one knows about. This will add to the mysteriousness of the book making it strange and also makes the viewer question the symbols and letters which are in the book which brings suspense.

|
To make the necromicon look old we feel hat is best to darken and distress the pages therefore making it look original and worn out. Inspiration for the products used to darken and age the paper came from YouTube (the video above) and we also used our own initiative to add coffee, soil and tea to make the liquid in which the paper would be submerged into to make it look aged. The pages took quite a while to do as there was a lot of dirt and time involved on how to make it look rough and authentic. |

Making a necromicon from scratch was such a tedious and time consuming task, never the less, it was fun and intriguing. Necromicons are made to "supposedly" summon spirits and supernatural entities, using a necromicon its a great way for Ursula to summon the devil as that is what necromicons were and still are originally used for. Instead of just using a normal book with normal writing and everything straight forward we have decided to make something that suites our subgenre, something that makes our audience see the unsettling side and we hope that this aspect can be seen in our trailer.
Real media Influences
CARRIE
This classic horror movie based on Stephen King's first novel stars Carrie White, a shy, different and strange teenager who is the laughing stock at her high school.
Her panic at her first menstruation, is a result of ignorance and religious guilt drummed into her by her fanatical mother, which causes her classmates' vicious cruelty to escalate. Finally, when her bullies engineers a prank at the school prom, Carrie lashes out in a horrifyingly showing her telekinetic powers. Many films had featured school bullies, but Carrie was one of the first to focus on the special brand of cruelty unique to teenage girls.
The "Carrie" movie is our main focus because it is from the same sub-genre as what we are aiming to create and it deals with bullying. Regarding this point, “Carrie” has the same typical psychological narrative which we would like to create and so this makes it easier for us to see the differences, likes and dislikes an the overall availability of what we are able to do to make a successful trailer.
e.g. in "Carrie", the main girl is shy and weird, who wears out of fashion clothes and happens to get bullied and in our trailer "Ursula" we have imposed the same concept however we have tweaked specific elements to be unique to our own trailer.

FACULTY
In a small-town high school. All of a sudden, the teachers start changing attitude. When two students to hide in a closet in the teacher's lounge, they witness the strangulation of Nurse Harper. Shocked, they manage to flee. Only moments later, the nurse seems to be very alive, but also somehow changed, like all the teachers and most of the students. Only Casey, Delilah and four others seem to be suspicious. Proof of an alien infection is finally brought by the chemistry teacher, who also points out a way to kill the infected humans. The plan now is to get the queen, before the aliens can spread out over the whole country.
This movie helps us as it is good for representing each character and their significance in the plot, from the way they dress to the qualities they have, and it is also very mysterious, In our project Natalie finds out that there is something wrong with Ursula, which she then goes along to tell her friends about her weird encounter.
