This is our EVALUATION QUESTION 4 page.New media technology is important to us nowadays it allowed us to research, plan and construct our teaser trailer in a more effective way and the use of internet has allowed us to advertise and promote our product as a marketing tool in many different formats. New technologies have brought many benefits to both consumers and media institutes which have made the production and exhibition of media products easier and cheaper. Over the years, technology has developed dramatically and because of it, it has allowed us to experience media aspects on different devices. From using analogues, film and print magazines to digital technology. Digitalisation has brought major changes to how and the way media industries are structured and operate. The use of technological convergence has allowed consumers to time shift between different formats of new media technology, enabling them to have a variety of options on ways to view a media product. This benefits us as our target is aimed at 16 year olds, and a majority of them own ipods, wii consoles or
mobile devices which allows them to view our final products from their device.
The new types of media technologies include:
mobile devices which allows them to view our final products from their device.
The new types of media technologies include:
- Phones, Iphones and
Tablets - Internet
- Hardware and
Software - Digital Technology
- Online Technology
New media technologies have completely reformed the way in which things are made. Through the development of technology it has enabled us to enter new elements like never before. Firstly new technology such as viral advertising and social networking sites has made marketing a lot easier and
cheaper in order to reach out to and target mass audiences as well as to receive feedback such as forums, questionnaires and so on. Furthermore new technology such as CGI has made it easier to produce films as well as to edit the films and again is cheaper to produce and allows you to be more creative than previous technology. In addition new technology has changed the magazine industry as magazines and newspapers are widely available online and also have their own websites. Throughout the construction, research, planning and evaluation of our media products new media technologies have been incredibly useful and have allowed us to gain a new experience with the new software as well as enabled us to enhance our work to a greater level.

Planning & Research
Primarily, we used Weebly to host all our work. Once we had used it to make an account, we created a menu and pages, then we would upload images, embed videos and paste our documents onto our site over the course of the project, weebly has helped us to progress to our current stage and by having this it means that we are able to document everything we do and all members of spooky entertainment are able to work on the website individually. Weebly has allowed us to keep our work all in order and now, we each have the knowledge of to how to create/design/organise pages and how to use them to benefit our project. Weebly is something that has allowed us to bind all of our work together which we have designed on other programmes.
Using weebly we could:
Overall we were pleased with how our weebly account worked because we found it really easy to manage and another good thing about the site is that we could access our data and posts from anywhere that has an internet connection whether it be at home, school on the train or using a PC, Mobile device or Tablet. We also found Weebly useful because it supported lots of different media inputs, meaning we were able to add in pictures, videos through youtube and use different themes to personalise our website.
Using weebly we could:
- Post any time from anywhere.
- Upload images, video and links to illustrate our points more clearly.
- Post any ideas or modifications to the production, research and planning.
- Track our progress.

YouTube is something that we have used in all stages of our development of our entire project since the beginning. YouTube is a popular video sharing website which is used worldwide by millions of people on a daily basis. It allows you to create a free account and then upload videos, It then allowed us to embed these video clips into our Weebly website using the easy "YouTube option" provided by Weebly. We decided to use YouTube over any other video sharing website as this is by far the most famous and has the highest amount of online user traffic meaning that the possibility for our video to be seen by a wider audience was much higher. For this project we decided to create a new account which we would use to upload all of the video clips to, instead of using already existing accounts, having a new account would make it easier for us to organise videos.
We were also able to use this website to collect audience feedback as other users are able to vote the videos either positively or negatively and also leave comments.
We found YouTube very useful during the research of existing film trailers. We found that most official film trailers are on YouTube and can be accessed by anyone. We’ve therefore used YouTube repeatedly when researching for our trailer.
We feel as If YouTube is one of the programmes needed to be used in order for me to be able to do our work because it allowed us to look at existing work that had been published. However, one issue which we did find with using YouTube however was the fact that the videos did take a long time to upload, around one hour combined with the time taken to export the videos from the editing program we used brought the total time up to around three hours, thus we had to devote a lot of our own time to this as we did not have this much time during lessons at school and nevertheless
YouTube is one of the programmes that we have constantly used through out all stages of production including, research, planning, construction, development and now in evaluations. We also used YouTube to upload our final trailer so that it can be watched by friends, family and people all around the world.

Using YouTube we could:
- •Relate links to similar videos from the same genre or actor.
- •Search easily and also navigate and save content that needed to be watched and analysed at a later date.
- •Watch HD videos due to very fast buffering speeds.
- •Easily share our findings with our peers before analysis, as a basic form of audience feedback for our research choices.
Google was the simplest tool of media tool we used. It helped us in all aspects of our coursework. We used it to get images for reference and comparison e.g. Downloading a horror film poster to annotate or to compare with our own. Google is just a search engine so it allowed us to access sites like Weebly and YouTube etc… But other than that we could use it as a learning resource because without it we would be lost. Like YouTube we used Google in the construction of our textual analyses and our trailer to help find out how to help us develop our media texts. Google was also used in the evaluation to help us search different audience research and feedback techniques.
We used Google Images to find five magazine covers and five posters. Which had to be related to the horror genre, and we wanted to have one of each form that follows, subverts or challenges their conventions, we used it to research different types of horror magazines, posters and trailers and throughout our project Google has been tremendously helpful.

Using IMDb we could:
|
For our research and planning we used websites such as IMDb (The Internet Movie Database) and Wikipedia. These types of websites were great for finding out information on teaser trailers and horror genres, On IMDb we could find out the top 50 horror genre films which people had voted for and we decided to watch as many teaser trailers for the films in the list. This helped with the research and planning because we got a better understanding in the differences in teaser trailers and we also checked specific movies like Carrie which is one of our main influences, and imdb has greatly helped us in finding out information about this movie.

Facebook is a widely famous social networking site. We used this website mainly as an easy way to receive audience research without having to actually go out and ask a grand amount of people face to face. Doing this also made the process of gathering results to be able to analyse them a lot easier, as with a questionnaire we found that a lot of time was spent collating the results and manually typing them up to be able to use them on our website. Facebook was used because of the recent rise in amounts of people using the social networking site, also this worked to our advantage because people on facebook are around the 16 yr old age group that which is what we have targeted our product towards. Although Facebook isn't a way that many people would gather research we think that it is very useful and also think that it will be something that will be done a lot more in the future.
Twitter was used in a similar way to Facebook to help distribute the questionnaire. We did however have different people on both social networking sites, all of similar ages, which helped us gain a large amount of responses. We could also target specific people, asking them to complete our questionnaire to increase the chances of them doing it, in addition we could also ask people to “retweet” the link to increase responses.

DAFONT is the website that we used when it came to our print products and trailer captions. we decided that we would use this website because we knew that it was reliable because we had used it before. With a vast range of originally created fonts by other users, dafont.com makes it simple to find a font that matched our image and overall look we were trying to create. This way we were able to find professional fonts that were used in film trailers such as for the end credits and an original font that would fit our image, ideas as well as the typical ‘psychological’ film genre. The benefit of this website is that all you have to do is to simply look for a font in the categories that are provided and then download and install it so that it shows up on your drop down of fonts. However if you switch computers and need to work on the fonts then you have to re download them and it becomes a bit tedious. The main time that we used this website was at the research stage and the audience research, as the audience was asked what font they preferred...This is recorded in our website. The main reason that we used this website was because we knew that it would have many fonts that we could use and they would fit our genre more than the original fonts that come with the computer..
We found the ‘An unfortunate event’ font which we thought fitted well with our idea of using a dreamlike, or olden hand drawn font to give the sense of the change in sizes correlating with Ursula and how something small changing into something big, as well as the boundaries between reality and fantasy.
Using dafont we could:

Using dafont we could:
- •Download many different fonts for free.
- •Skip through a range of categories and styles instead of settling for the standard San Serif and Serif fonts.
- •Easily compare font styles, analysing their beneficial meaning to our final products.
- •View fonts from genres, such as ‘Horror’ making it easy to find a font for our genre of film text.

We drew the story board by hand but once that was done and scanned into the computer we needed to cut up the images separately which is what the Kodak esp c315 had done for us, we scanned the story board into the computer and automatically the Kodak esp c315 cropped them for us making it much easier and quicker to proceed into the construction of the animatic. Also, we have used this scanner to upload work on paper needed for our website e.g. movie reviews and audience research
|
Microsoft Office Suite we chose to use the Microsoft Office Suite as we all felt highly proficient in Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Before some of our work was uploaded onto our website, the important documents were saved on word to ensure their safety if our website encountered any problems or errors. Power Points were used to assist our presentation of our work, while Excel helped to create charts and graphs to provide a visual representation of our audience research. We used Excel to copy the results of our audience feedback into a chart which highlighted the majority responses. We then copied the graphs from the spreadsheet and saved them as jpeg files.
|
Using Microsoft Office we could:
- easily access the programmes as they were installed on many portable devices and computers.
- Make graphs, charts and tables making all data simple to interpret and analyse.
- use PowerPoint as a way to make mood-boards as an easier/ more simple alternative than Photoshop.
Through Google we were able to find free sound, From this website we were able to legally download free sound representing our film genre. We were not able to use existing music as this would be infringing copyright. The music and sounds on this site had been created by people around the world and put on this site to share with everyone. After downloading these sounds we were able to import them into sound track pro or garage band, this gave our trailer more texture and therefore gave a larger impact. This website allowed us to download free sound effects, ones which weren't available on soundtrack pro. We wanted aloud ‘thud’ which would be used in the trailer to create dimension. We thought this would be effective in adding some edge. We found this website easy to download sound effects and easy to find different the sounds we wanted. We felt this added a sense of drama and made the trailer seem more jumpy. If we didn't have access to this website we would have struggled a bit to find the sound effects we wanted for the trailer, we wouldn't have been able to achieve the effect we wanted.
Although ‘Windows Live Movie Maker’ does not offer as much as other editing programs such as ‘Final Cut Pro’, by editing, we mean neatening up the footage, by cutting out pauses at the beginning and end of filming also inserting titles, adding simple transitions to make it more formal. It had everything we needed to edit the videos for costume & makeup to a good standard and as it was readily available on our laptops at home, it saved time and money by not having to buy and download software. Windows live movie maker is very simple and straight forward so to make those clips all we had to do was import our logo to the beginning of the clip and use transitions to make the cuts sync together.

CONSTRUCTION
Final Cut pro is the programme that we have used to create our actual trailer and animatic. This was something that we had not used before so we weren't completely confident when it came to using it. However we knew that we were going to be using it a lot so we had to get used to it quickly. This is a software that is designed for work to be created that is to be edited. Final Cut Pro allowed us to make our shots last for certain amount of times, allowed us to change the pace, allowed us to edit the transitions from shot to shot. Another useful thing that we were able to do on final cut was to create our captions and by creating the captions on here it meant that we were able to change the timing of them and also meant that we didn't have to transfer them from one programme to another. We were also able to copy the editing on one piece of footage and transport it to the whole trailer so all the editing applied on one of the footage is applied onto the whole trailer making the trailer have the same colours and effects as each other giving it continuity. we were able to manually manipulate footage such as editing the colour hues to blues or contrasts using the specific tools. Also, with the use of the time line we could more precisely cut and split footage so that it was more professionally completed and accurate down to a millisecond of editing – therefore being more concise with the music, such as cutting precisely on the beat. Final Cut Pro is something that we couldn't have avoided using but it has taught us many skills and has allowed our final trailer to come to order.
Using final cut pro we could:
•Edit, add transitions and stylize footage.
•Cut, re-edit and re-export footage.
•Software was easier to use as time went by.
•Manipulate audio e.g. the pitch, bass and overall volume.

The main piece of editing software which we used in the construction of our ancillary production pieces was an image editing program called Adobe Photoshop. We found that Photoshop is a really brilliant piece of media technology. We were at an advantage when we started the project in this respect as we had some experience in the using of this program from our AS Level Media the previous year.
|
We decided to use this particular program because it was also extremely useful that the both school computers (Macs and normal computers) which were available for us to use at school during lesson time, and also our own computers, had the same software installed and so we were able to quickly and easily transfer files between them via USB sticks.
We used Photoshop in the construction of our 2 ancillary pieces and for audience research for the drafting for our film poster and magazine cover. We found that Photoshop allowed us to push the limits as to what could be done with a standard digital image. One of the things you can see from the images below is the change of how our original image looked and the final edited image. The main pieces that have been edited are the eyes and the skin. Since the beginning of the project our skills in using Photoshop have again improved as we used the program for the production of our entire film poster and magazine front cover.Photoshop has allowed us to design layers for each item that was used and this has allowed us to just work on one part of the image if we didn't want to focus on the whole thing. By using layers it means that we were more able to add new items to the whole image which made room for possible new ideas but if I thought that there was room for improvement then we were easily able to either hide the layer or delete it by sending it to the recycling bin.

For the more complex editing of our dominant images, we used Photoshop for tools like brightness/contrast to brighten images and specific parts like the eyes. We used the colour balance tool to recolour the whole image to give it a red tint, symbolic of blood. Additionally, the blur and smudge tools where of use to remove skin imperfections, like spots, shadows and lines plus generally smoothing the skin/clothing to make the image look of a higher quality.
Using Photoshop we could:
Using Photoshop we could:
- Design our own production company logo.
- Overlap image files using layers, the clone stamp tool, free transforming, rasterizing, content aware tool and the magic wand tool.
- alter the images to fit the certain way that we wanted it.
- see the history was there for us to see so we would know what we had done to images.
- correct a mistake as the undo button efficiently got rid of it.
- Add effects to could also be added.
Along with programmes Like Final Cut Pro, creating our teaser trailer was the first time we had used Soundtrack Pro also. We chose to use Soundtrack Pro to create the soundtrack for our trailer because we felt that our trailer needed foley sounds and specific sounds in general. We found Soundtrack Pro really easy to use as it is clearly labelled with a number of different subheadings so we could locate the sound effects necessary for our trailer. It also meant that we were able to use real musical instruments in the background underneath a number of different sounds to add more depth to it as we could create a long piece of music and then cut it down for the areas we needed it to be in.
|
Another additional program which we decided to use was a piece of Audio software available on the Apple Macs which allowed us to create our own music tracks by combining various different pre-made audio loops. We decided to use this to create a series of basic soundtracks to some of the scenes in our trailer. The program also allowed us to add in foley sound effects such as laughing and the finished tracks were also able to be exported directly into Final Cut Pro.
|
We then decided to use adobe audition opposed to soundtrack pro as towards the end soundtrack pro stopped working on our home pc's, It is a lot like sound track pro however there were some minor differences e.g. there was a thumbnail of the video playing whilst the sound was being edited, this was helpful as this now means that the sound can correlate with the cuts accordingly.

For this project we were given the option of using video cameras available to us through the college by means of loaning them out whenever we needed to film scenes. Because we didn't have any good video cameras at home, we decided to use school equipment. The camera had 10x optical zoom which allowed us to film the same scenes from a number of distances, whichever was practical for the location. By using an SLR camera it meant that we were able to capture images at the highest and best quality depending on the lighting and other surrounding features. The ISO was the key to quality of lighting, it had to be set to the right level to give the shot a good deal of lighting whether it be making it darker or brighter. This gave the image content quality by preventing a blur effect which caused pictures to look out of focus.
The camera could also take videos which was a bonus because the footage was something that we couldn't have completed our project without as it is essentially that, which enables us to create our trailer. The benefit of using a video camera is that the initial ideas that we had were able to be put into order when it came to filming and it meant in some cases what we envisioned something to look like didn't actually look right so by renting out the camera it meant that we were able to capture moments that weren't planned and we were also able to go off from our initial storyboard a little bit and we found that these shots worked better.
The only other equipment which we did make sure that we always used was a basic tripod to hold the camera in place and to stop any movement which would occur if the camera was hand held during filming. We also used digital cameras in order to get few pictures that we needed for our research and planning stage.
Using this cannon 600D camera we could:

Using this cannon 600D camera we could:
- look at the small screen on it which allowed us to watch what had been filmed.
- Portable as it was quite small and not heavy.
- rewind or fast-forward the footage so we didn't record over anything.
- The battery life was limited; therefore it needed to be turned off when it was not in use in order to save the battery.
- The footage shot in the dark was quite grainy which made the quality of a lesser standard.
- There was no light on the camera which again, made shooting in dark places hard as we had to rely on natural light or professional lighting
This accessory was used very effectively, it is a support stand for the camera which is very portable. It allowed us to focus the camera in a steady position with the privilege of having allowance for rotation and also increasing the height of which the camera is placed. this was useful as it remains stationary which meant that the shots we had captured will not be affected in any way by the unsteadiness of the person filming. furthermore it gave us the opportunity to get a variation of different shot angles. for example we had used the tripod in assisting us in high angle and low angle shots.
|
We used this accessory to correct the lighting problems we had encountered when filming and taking pictures in the studio for our magazine and poster. It was very useful as the lighting in the studio was too dark so it was possible for us to get rid of the darkness with the kino flo lighting.

VideoBlocks is a website that was very helpful to us in the construction stage as we had many choices of high quality stock, video, motion backgrounds, production music, sounds effects, special effects, After Effects templates.
The site gave us 7 days to download anything that we wanted free of charge. We wanted to use this site to help with the intro of the trailer and sound. The site had a lot of interesting and amazing templates for intros however most of the intros downloaded through this website didn't work as they only showed a colour spectrum which was quite disheartening as this repetitively occurred. Then we finally found a template from videoblocks which worked, after all failed attempts. |
Adobe After Effects CS4 is a digital motion graphics and compositing software published by Adobe Systems, used in the post-production process of film making and television production. It is primarily used for creating motion graphics and visual effects. We have downloaded a free trial version at home of this software, because we needed to create a good company logo effect at the start of the trailer.
|
With the help of downloading templates from videoblocks we were able to create really good company logo intro for our trailer, all we did was open up the folder after downloading is from videoblocks and then replace the logo and words. Even though we didn't do the work from scratch we think it was really hard to use because if we wanted to change anything other than the logo and the words it would've been really difficult and because none of us had experience using it before – it took us collectivley about 6 hours just to get used to what the basics are.
Using this Adobe After Effects we could:
Using this Adobe After Effects we could:
- Colour correct and colour grade.
- Create titles and apply effects.
- Create professional intros and outros.
- Reduce camera shake and improve the quality of shots.
Throughout the production of our Media products we used Apple Mac computers provided by our college, it benefited us as programmes such as Photoshop, Adobe After effecs, Final Cut etc were already installed in. When it came to doing work outside of class this was the thing that we didn't necessarily have access to and this was something that we thought was going to be hard to deal with but the thing that we have found out is that it can be worked around as we need to prioritise and get all of the major work completed in college where we had had complete access to these, so at home we just finished off certain bits of work.
Because MAC’s are such high and advanced technology it means that they come fully equipped and also us getting used to knew equipment guarantees that they will be more popular in the future giving us an advantage because we have gotten used to them.

Once footage was filmed, to prevent them getting lost or damaged whilst being uploaded to the computer hardware, we stored some of our files on an usb. This allowed us to keep all our files in a specific area, and if there was any trouble e.g. Computer crashed, then our work could be easily located on the usb.
|
Evaluation
There are some things that have been used in all of the stages which are construction, design, production and evaluation and this is one of these things because our work in class is always done on a MAC and the reasoning is because all of the classrooms are fitted with these and the benefit is that they come with software that are essential for us to use in this project which have been extremely helpful.
The Mac computers also provided us with a built in camera and we used this to film our audience feedback for our evaluation section.
This was helpful as we didn't need to find anyone to hold a camera and we could record straight into the computer as there were no need to transfer videos from a sd card (or usb). |
YouTube was used to upload our film trailer once it had been
completed. Instead of YouTube we could have uploaded our trailer onto social networking sites such as Facebook where videos do not get viral as fast as with YouTube. Without media technologies, this would not have been possible and instead we would have had to relied on other, less interesting approaches. Face to face we asked potential audiences opinions and whether they feel we need to make alterations to it. By being able to access our trailer, it made the evaluation process much easier, as we weren't having to do it from memory and also that we could access it from home. Our trailer was also placed onto our website on the home page along with our ancillaries. |
we used Microsoft PowerPoint a lot during our evaluation, as it is a more visually interesting way of presenting our findings. It also allowed us to display relevant pictures/other material and arrange it neatly, it was again used to collate the results of the audience feedback and it was used to make some mood-boards in our evaluation section. We found using PowerPoint very easy, as we had used it many times in the past. This also meant that we were able to focus on our evaluation rather than working out how to use new technologies. Furthermore, as PowerPoint is widely available, we were not limited to particular school computers and we could continue my work at home.
|
Photoshop allowed us to creatively produce the billboard advert, Magazine advert and new logos. The software was key in allowing us to create these media products. Photoshop due to its huge editing tools available enabled us to do anything we wanted. One of which was the use of the colour replacement tool. This allowed us to change the colour of the existing logo,
We also created a mood board using Photoshop to showcase all the new media along with the writing for headings as downloaded fonts aren't compatible with weebly, we needed to make them into a jpeg. |
We also used media technologies in the other parts of our evaluation. We used the computer to create moodboards and then upload them onto our weebly website using the image option provided by weebly. Doing the evaluation on the computer made it easy to upload pictures and incorporate them into our answers and examples furthermore using a computer improved our evaluation by making it possible for us to use other methods of presenting our answers instead of always in the written form. We took advantage of this by creating mood-boards using Photoshop or PowerPoint, new media technologies has therefore affected every aspect of our project.
Overall we found that we used as many Media technologies we could to make our media coursework more interactive and more professional.By using all the different technologies to create and present our work. we have been able to document, upload and share all of our work as well as keep it online so we can create copies and access it easily. The technologies we have used have also taught us about how we can use different multimedia technologies to create a piece of work which we can then share with the public for feedback. As shown in the planning, research, construction and evaluation stage of our media project we used a varied amount of online programmes to complete our work to the highest possible standard. Using the internet website ‘Google’ was helpful when we needed to search up for all relating to horror movies such as its billboards, magazines, trailers as it gave us results from different time periods and we were able to compare different products.
