In order to create the sound-scape for my trailer, I've started by research into different horror trailer that is specific to our sub-genre which have enabled me to get ideas for our trailer. The trailers that I've research into is:
|
Carrie- The start of the trailer starts will a quiet drone sounds playing as we see the establishing shot of the location, this is then founded by singing played in the background. The volume of the drone sound then starts to increase steadily with the singing staying at the same pace. The drone sounds then reaches it maximize volume and ends with a thump. This is a effective start that gets the audience slowly reveal into the trailer. The drone sounds then return back to into normal steady volume along with a piano sound implement which then including loud thump along the middle sequences of the trailer. This then changes which a loud thump that start to indicate the audience that something bad is already happening. At 0.59 second it then has a mini silence for 2 sec which creates the cliff hanging which then lead to a loud thump and then leads to a fast paced drone sounds which then lead to the major thump which get people to realize that there is something wrong. This is part of the sound is very important to are trailer and I would like to start these sounds and implement it to the last 20-30 shots in our trailer. However this then lead to another drone sound and comes with the loud thump but then changes to a sweet soft music in the background that follows along with a another drone sounds. This trailer overall uses very effective sounds such as drones and the piano that I will implement into our sounds especially the start to middle part of the trailer which uses sounds such as the loud thumps, piano and singing that will fit in with our trailer.

The last exorcism part 2- The start of the trailer starts with heavenly singing in the background along with a sustain on the keyboard which is holding the notes, this then continues with quiet thumps that makes the transitions of the scene look effective which then followed will screams on a woman leading to a sounds of blasting fire. In the start of the trailer I like to uses of the heavenly singing. After that there is a immediate loud thumps that play along with the music which adds more thrill and excitement to the trailer. However the sounds then changes at 0.31 seconds by a loud thumps which alerts the audience that sounds bad is about to happen which then turns into silence and we hear the sound of a telephone ring. Then there is a sound of continuous bells that creates thumps noise. This sounds starts to evaporate as we hear a fast tempo of a drone that comes in which then ends as silence at 1.03 which then follows with the dialogue, leading to a very loud thump. In the start to middle of the trailer I especially like the sounds of the thumps which I will implement into our trailer as it sounds very effective and is use effective in the duration of changes from sense to sense.

Grave Encounters- The starting of Grave encounters starts with a sci-fi sounds that is use to establish to production company logo which then fades out. This then re-starts with a loud drone thump which is then followed up with clips sounds, which then fade out and start with an instrument which is a triangle along with a slow pace drone sound. At around 0.39 second into the trailer this then changes with a thump which then starts to speed up with a faced pace drone sounds and then a massive thump sounds when the window closes. This start is very effective and I especially like to use of the sci-fi sound to establish the production company logo as it goes in further to the trailer I begin to also like the continuous drone sound that play along with it which is what I will like to implement to our trailer as it create suspense to the trailer. At about 0.53 seconds the whole sound begins to change with a slow paced instrumental along with sounds of ghost and bad TV signal which then turn it around with drone sound and paced tempo violins with a loud thump. At 1.25 minutes the sound then changes again with sounds of violin, trumpets and drums that show the audience that something is about to happen as the final change in sound appears the pace and volume begin to raise on the sound and then ends which a loud photo shutter sound and with silence which then indicator to the audience that the scary moments has arrive as we hear the sounds of a screaming girl. The end of the trailer is very effective and I would like to use some of the sounds such as the photo shutter sound, silence, violin, trumpets and drums which all build and scary horror sound.

The Possession- The starting of possession start with gentle sounds of a keyword which then follows along with sounds of quiet drone noise playing in the background which then quickly changes to silence and re-starts with a drone sounds playing in the background. At 0.49 second the sounds then changes to drone sounds with voices of ghost steady getting loud which then changes with a thump. This is a very good start of the trailer due to the build up which adds suspension along the way on the trailer this then makes people wonders what going to happen next. However the trailer then continues with a steady paced instrumental playing in the background along with screams of a ghost and of the girl. The music continues to playing along with different ghost sounds playing but then changes to the sounds of a high keyboard note along with sounds of a screaming girl. At 1.37 second the music continues to play along with the demonic sounds and sounds of a bunch of moth flying around, then the music begin to speed up and end with silence closely followed up with a thump of the holy bible flying out of the father’s hand. At 2.03 of the trailer the sound then changes to heavenly sounds but ends with a thump. The middle to end of the trailer which is from 1.08 to 2.31 is an effective build up and ending due to the sounds of the thumps, the heavenly music, the demonic sounds and silence which I would like to implement into the trailer as the sounds create suspense and thrill to the trailer.

This program was developed by Apple inc as a part of the iLife software package available on OS X. Garageband contains different features such as Audio Recording, Virtual Software instruments, Guitare features, MIDI editing and Music lessons. This allowed me to change voice over that I used into a more distorted version that fit in with the trailer. Also to adjust pitch, tempo and volume on a audio to develop it into something that might work well with the trailer.

Final cut pro is a non-linear video editing software that was developed b Apple inc, these features in the software including colour correction filter that manual allow you to adjust each colour in each fame, videoscopes and a selection of generator such as slugs, test cards and noise. Also audio filters such as keying tools, mattes, vocal de-poppers and de-essers. Although this is mainly a video editing software I did use this to import our sounds into final cut pro which then allowed us to fade in and out each track and alter the volume.

10th October 2013-Stage 1
Firstly we began to experiment around with a audio that I found off freesound.org and was applying different filters onto the sounds such as distortion as we need it to be distorted as it gave it the sense of realism to the trailer. Along with this we decided to use the vocal transformer and tried to transform the sound into a monster, however we did decided to not used it in the end.
|
Firstly began to experiment around with the sound and choose any sound that we did like, but we did notice that the animatic did have a lot of quick cuts which meant the need to search for a lot of fast paced sounds which including thuds, aggressive beats and occasionally the need for slow beats to create a weave of different sounds that helps to diversify the sound at different moment in the soundtrack .
|
20th October 2013- Stage 2
Following the previous session we listen to the original sound that was contained with the animatic and noticed that we needed a montage in the middle sequences therefore we tried to create a build by using the rock kit in order to create a fast beat montage that enable the trailer to build up tension, we then exported this sound into soundtrack Pro to see if it would fit, however the sound did need more adjust in order to build that paced.
|
During this session we carry on build my soundtrack and started to find different type of sounds that fits very well with the anamtic, however we did notice that the sounds didn't fit in with the soundtrack that was contain in the anamtic, therefore meaning the need to start again or change and few sound in the trailer to help it to fit in. Additionally we did lose all my work which resulting in me having to start again.
|
10th November 2013- Stage 3
Following the last session we listen to my sound and notice that a vital feature was missing and this was the need for a eerie beat to follow from the start into the middle sequence in trailer. Therefore we decided to use Garageband and use Sub Synth Bass and Upright Jazz bass along with a sound that we followed in Garageband in order to enhance the eerie beat however along the way we realised that I need to take out the Upright Jazz bass instrumental and add effects on the sounds which gave it an eerie to the start of the trailer
|
Due to the last incident that occurred on the 20th October we found and new type of program called Adobe Audition which was an alternative to Soundtrack Pro and contain features that Soundtrack Pro didn't have such as the ability to thumb-list your trailer which view it in image and allows you to get thud and transitions accurately. Therefore we then start by find new Sounds from external website which started to sound much better, however my group did inform that she change some parts of the trailer, hence the need to change some sounds.
|
17th November 2013- Stage 4
During this session on the 17th November which 5 days before the deadline, we started to make sure that allow the sounds where syncing with the trailer as we did get a copy of the current trailer from my group member with therefore allowed me to finally start finishing a tweaking the sounds. However we did find that some sounds where not need so we found more sounds and experimented different effects on them to see how they will sounds. Due to this we then added our current trailer to see how these new sounds would fit and realised that they did fit so exported it as mp3.
20th November 2013- Final Stage
On the 20th November 2013 we added the final touches to my current sounds so we decided to separate each sound into their own separate track because this will allow me to re-adjust the sound in final cut pro if need but we did notice that some sounds did cross fade into other meaning we had to put some sounds together with others to keep that continuity going. This therefore meant it was kept in time with the trailer and we did export each track as a mp3 onto an external device to now put into final cut pro and make the rest of the amendments.
|
After I finished with adobe I then import my sounds into final cut pro and start to re-arrange the sounds in order for it to fit in with the trailer, during the process of doing this I did occur some problem which were that some parts at the start and middle was at different volume lengths so due to this I then decided to lower some parts at the start in order for it to fit in with the middle. This help with continuity as it was more consistent. In addition I did use the pen tool to fade some sounds in and out in order to match it with the scene or captions this help it to also fit in with the trailer. We then exported the video and audio as one a whole into a Full HD (1920*1080) Quicktime movie.
